John Hervey (born August 18, 1616 – died January 18, 1680) was an English courtier and politician. He served in the English Parliament from 1661 to 1679. During the English Civil War, he supported the Royalist side.

Early Life and the Civil War

John Hervey was the oldest son of Sir William Hervey. His mother was Susan Jermyn. He grew up in Ickworth, England. In 1636, he traveled abroad. He visited Leyden (now Leiden) in 1637.

From about 1641 to 1646, John Hervey worked in the royal household. He was a gentleman of the privy chamber. This meant he was close to the King. During the English Civil War (1642-1646), he was a captain in the Royalist army. He fought for King Charles I. After the war, he returned to Ickworth. When his father passed away in 1660, John inherited the family estate.

A Career in Parliament and Court

After the war, John Hervey became a J.P. for Suffolk in July 1660. This role involved keeping law and order. He also became a commissioner for taxes in Suffolk.

In 1661, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Hythe. This was part of the Cavalier Parliament. He continued to serve as a tax commissioner for Westminster. In 1662, he became the treasurer and receiver for Queen Catherine of Braganza. He held this important position until he died.

John Hervey was also interested in science and culture. In 1664, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This was a group for important scientists. He was also a major investor in the Duke of York's theatre.

He was a commissioner for taxes in Middlesex from 1673. In 1677, he joined the Royal Fishery Company. This company helped manage fishing in England.

Family and Legacy

John Hervey married Elizabeth Hervey in 1658. She was the daughter of William Hervey, 1st Baron Hervey. John and Elizabeth did not have any children.

John Hervey passed away at the age of 64. He was buried at St Mary's Church, Ickworth. Since he had no children, his estate went to his younger brother, Sir Thomas Hervey.
