John Hudson (born 1773, died 31 October 1843) was an English mathematician and a church leader. He was well-known for being a top student in math at Cambridge University. He also taught famous students like George Peacock.
John Hudson's Early Life
John Hudson was born in 1773. His father, also named John Hudson, was a farmer from a place called Haverbrack in England. John went to Heversham School. In 1793, he started studying at Trinity College, Cambridge.
In 1797, John Hudson became the "senior wrangler." This was a special title given to the student who scored the highest in the final mathematics exam at Cambridge. He also won the Smith's prize that same year. He earned his Master of Arts (MA) degree in 1800.
Career and Teaching
In 1798, John Hudson became a Fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge. This meant he was a senior member of the college. Later, in 1807, he became a tutor there. He taught many students, including the well-known mathematician George Peacock. He also taught John Martin Frederick Wright.
In 1815, John Hudson became the vicar of Kendal, a town in England. A vicar is a type of priest in the Church of England. In the same year, he married the daughter of an army officer named Culliford.
One of Hudson's students at Cambridge was Charles James Blomfield. Blomfield later became an important bishop in the church. Bishop Blomfield once visited Hudson's church. At a dinner party, Blomfield joked, "I remember well, Mr. Hudson, how much I stood in awe of you at College." Hudson quickly replied, "Perhaps so, but your Lordship has turned the tables on me now." This showed their friendly relationship.
Later Years and Death
John Hudson passed away at Haverbrack on Tuesday, 31 October 1843. He was 71 years old. He was buried inside the parish church in Kendal.
