John Pierre Herman Joubert (pronounced jew-BAIR) (born March 20, 1927 – died January 7, 2019) was a talented composer. He was born in South Africa but spent most of his life in Britain. He was especially known for his choral works, which are pieces of music written for choirs to sing.

John Joubert was a very active composer for many years. He also taught music at universities for a long time.

A Life in Music

Joubert worked as a music professor at the University of Hull and the University of Birmingham for 36 years. This means he taught students about music at these universities. In 1986, he decided to retire early so he could spend all his time composing music. He kept writing music well into his 80s!

He wrote over 160 different musical pieces. These included two symphonies (large pieces for an orchestra), four concertos (pieces for a solo instrument with an orchestra), and seven operas (musical plays).

Famous Works

Even though he wrote many different kinds of music, John Joubert is perhaps most famous for his choral music. Some of his well-known pieces include the carols Torches and There is No Rose of Such Virtue. Carols are often songs sung during holidays. He also wrote the anthem O Lorde, the Maker of Al Thing, which is a piece of music often sung in churches.

Early Life and Education

John Joubert was born in Cape Town, South Africa. He loved music from a young age and studied at several important music schools. He attended Diocesan College and the South African College of Music in his home country. Later, he moved to England to study at the Royal Academy of Music, which is a very famous music school.

Later Years

For more than 50 years, John Joubert lived in Moseley, a part of Birmingham, England. He passed away in Moseley on January 7, 2019, when he was 91 years old. He left behind a wonderful collection of music for people to enjoy.
