Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Lindsey Morrison (born May 1819 – died December 21, 1899) was an important pioneer who helped build early settlements in the Oregon Country. He arrived in 1842, traveling with other famous pioneers like Medorem Crawford and Asa Lovejoy in the same wagon train. Morrison was a skilled carpenter, known for his careful and detailed work.

Early Life and Moving West

John Morrison was born in Scotland in May 1819. When he was about 12 years old, in 1831, he moved to Connecticut in the United States. There, he learned the valuable skill of carpentry, which is building things with wood.

In 1842, Morrison made the long journey to the Oregon Country. This was a big adventure, as many people were moving west to find new opportunities.

Building a New Life in Oregon

Once in Oregon, Morrison put his carpentry skills to good use. In 1843, he worked as a carpenter for the Methodist Mission, helping to build important structures for the community. Later, he moved to Oregon City, which was a growing settlement. He became well-known for being very careful and precise in his work.

Morrison built several houses in the areas that would become Portland, Oregon and Oregon City. One of his most famous buildings that still stands today is the Barclay House in Oregon City.

In 1846, Morrison built a house for Francis Pettygrove in early Portland. The street where Pettygrove's house was located was later named Morrison Street, honoring John Lindsey Morrison.

The Morrison Bridge

The well-known Morrison Street Bridge, which crosses the Willamette River in Portland, was built in 1887. It is believed to be named after John Lindsey Morrison. Some say it was named directly for him, while others believe it simply took the name from Morrison Street, which was already named in his honor.

Later Life and Legacy

In the 1850s, John Morrison moved to the San Juan Islands in what is now Washington state. He lived there for many years until his death.

John Lindsey Morrison passed away on December 21, 1899, at his home near Griswold, on Shaw Island in San Juan County, Washington. He is buried at Valley Cemetery in Friday Harbor, Washington. His work as a carpenter helped shape the early towns of Oregon, and his name lives on through Morrison Street and the Morrison Bridge in Portland.
