John Linnell Bond was an English architect who lived a long time ago, from 1764 to 1837. An architect is someone who designs buildings.

Early Life and Training

John Bond studied at a famous art school called the Royal Academy. He was very good at his studies, winning a gold medal in 1786. He sometimes showed his designs at the academy until 1797.

After finishing school, he spent several years traveling. He went to Italy and Greece to study old buildings and ancient designs. When he came back to London, he started his own architecture business. He designed many big, fancy houses for people.

Notable Projects

Exton Hall and Stamford Hotel

In 1810, a large house called Exton Hall had a fire. The owner, Sir Gerard Noel, asked Bond for help. Bond changed a nearby 17th-century house for Sir Gerard to live in.

Bond also designed the Stamford Hotel in Stamford, Lincolnshire for Sir Gerard. This hotel was built in the "Greek revival" style. This means it looked like ancient Greek buildings. It had tall columns, similar to those found on the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Greece. Bond made many other designs for Sir Gerard, but they were never built.

Waterloo Bridge Design

John Bond also worked on a design for a bridge in London. This bridge was first called the Strand Bridge. Later, it became famous as Waterloo Bridge. He worked on this project with an engineer named George Dodd. However, another engineer, John Rennie, later took over the project.

Later Life and Legacy

Bond also wrote articles about architecture. He shared his ideas in a publication called the Literary Gazette. He knew a lot about old books and even translated a book by Vitruvius, a famous Roman architect.

John Bond passed away in Newman Street, London. An article written after his death called him "one of the most peaceful and amiable of mankind." This means he was known as a very kind and gentle person.
