John Louis Hayden (born November 2, 1866 – died February 22, 1936) was an important officer in the United States Army. He served in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He took part in several conflicts, including World War I.
A Life in the Army
John Louis Hayden was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1866. His father was a soldier who fought in the American Civil War. John went to the United States Military Academy, also known as West Point, and graduated in 1888.
After graduating, Hayden joined the First Artillery unit. He served at many different military bases, including the Presidio of San Francisco and Fort Riley. From Fort Riley, he was sent to serve in the Ghost Dance War. He commanded a special type of cannon during this time. He was involved in the Battle of Wounded Knee and the Drexel Mission Fight. Because of his brave actions in the Drexel Mission Fight, he was recommended for a special, higher rank called a brevet promotion.
From 1892 to 1896, Hayden taught military science at the University of Washington.
Rising Through the Ranks
John Louis Hayden became a brigadier general on August 5, 1917. This is a very high rank in the army. In September 1917, he took command of the 56th Field Artillery Brigade, which was a large group of artillery soldiers. From September 1917 to March 1918, General Hayden led the 31st Infantry Division.
In February 1919, he was in charge of U.S. forces in Seattle during the Seattle General Strike. This was a big worker protest. Everyone, no matter their political views, thought he did a great job handling the situation.
General Hayden retired from the army in 1922. He spent the rest of his life living in Port Townsend, Washington. In June 1930, the U.S. Congress officially gave him back his brigadier general rank. He passed away on February 22, 1936.
