Early Life and Work
John Lowry started his career as a chandler in Cambridge. A chandler was someone who made and sold candles. He became a "freeman" of the city through his apprenticeship. Being a freeman meant he had special rights and could participate in the city's government.
He later joined the Common Council of Cambridge. This was a group of people who helped manage the city.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
In November 1640, John Lowry was chosen to be a member of parliament (MP) for Cambridge. He served in a special meeting of Parliament called the Long Parliament. Interestingly, he shared this role with Oliver Cromwell, who became a very famous leader in English history.
Role in the English Civil War
During the English Civil War, John Lowry became a colonel in the Parliamentary army. A colonel is a high-ranking officer. In 1645, he was working to get supplies for the army from the Speaker of the Commons. The Speaker is the person who leads the discussions in the House of Commons.
At this time, John Lowry was also the mayor of Cambridge. The mayor is the head of the city government.
Dispute with Cambridge University
As mayor, John Lowry had a disagreement with Cambridge University. Usually, the mayor would take an oath to protect the university's rights. However, Lowry refused to take this oath.
The university was unhappy and asked the House of Lords for help. The House of Lords was another important part of Parliament, like a higher court. The problem was not solved until 1647. The House of Lords decided that the university was right. They ordered that the mayor must respect the university's special privileges, which are like special rules or rights.
Later Political Career
In 1659, John Lowry was elected as an MP for Cambridge again. This time, he served in the Third Protectorate Parliament. This was another period when England was governed by Parliament, after the Civil War.
Final Years
John Lowry passed away in 1669. He was buried on July 18, 1669, at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Cambridge.
