John Mortimer Harrell (December 14, 1828 – July 4, 1907) was an American lawyer and writer. He made history by sending the very first telegram from Little Rock to Memphis. During the American Civil War, he was a brave cavalry officer. After the war, he led a group of former Confederate soldiers in Arkansas.

John Harrell's Life and Career
John Mortimer Harrell had an interesting career. In 1861, he was a political editor for a newspaper called the Old Line Democrat. He later became the editor of another weekly paper, the Southern States.
Newspaper Work
In 1876, Harrell was one of the editors for the Arkansas Gazette. Soon after, he moved to Hot Springs. He lived there for many years. Around 1880, he also edited the Hot Springs Telegraph newspaper.
Role in Reconstruction
During the Reconstruction Period, John Harrell was very involved in politics. He served as the secretary for the Democratic convention in 1867. He wrote a lot about the political events happening in Little Rock at that time. He kept many newspaper clippings and added his own thoughts to them.
The Brooks and Baxter War
Harrell's writings were published in 1893 as a book called Brooks and Baxter War. This book is a very important source of information about the Brooks–Baxter War. This was a political conflict in Arkansas that happened in the 1870s.
In 1899, John Harrell worked with John Dimitry to write a book. It was called Confederate Military History, Volume X: Louisiana and Arkansas. This book shared stories about the military history of the Confederate states.
