General John Mostyn (born around 1709, died 16 February 1779) was an important British soldier and politician. He also served as a colonial administrator, which means he helped manage a colony for Britain.
Early Life and Army Career
John Mostyn was born around 1709. He was the younger son of Sir Roger Mostyn, a well-known person at the time. John went to school at Westminster School and then studied at Christ Church, Oxford University.
He joined the army in 1733 as an Ensign. This was a junior officer rank. He quickly moved up the ranks. In 1743, he became a captain-lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards. This was a very famous army regiment.
Military Service and Key Battles
In 1745, John Mostyn became a captain of a company. Soon after, he fought in the Battle of Fontenoy. This was a big battle during the War of the Austrian Succession. He was wounded during this battle, showing his bravery.
From 1746 until King George II died, Mostyn served as a Groom of the Bedchamber. This was an important role. It meant he was a personal attendant to the King.
He also commanded several different army regiments. These included the Royal Fusiliers and various Dragoon regiments. Dragoons were soldiers who rode horses into battle. In 1772, he was promoted to the highest rank: General.
Governor of Menorca
General Mostyn served as the Governor of Menorca for ten years. This was from 1768 to 1778. Menorca is an island in the Mediterranean Sea. It was controlled by Britain at that time.
His role as governor was mostly a "titular" one. This means he held the title but did not live on the island. Instead, his deputy was in charge of things day-to-day. From 1774, his deputy was James Murray. Murray later became the governor after Mostyn. Murray had to surrender the island to Spanish forces in 1782.
John Mostyn never married. He died on 16 February 1779.
