John Newey (born December 4, 1664 – died September 13, 1735) was an important English churchman. He served as the Dean of Chichester from 1727 until his death. This means he was a senior leader in the Church of England.

John Newey's Early Life and Family
John Newey was born in a town called Kinver, in Staffordshire, England. His father, Jonathan Newey, was the Rector of Kinver, which is a type of church leader. John was the older son in his family.
Education and Learning
John Newey went to school in Kinver. Later, he studied at Pembroke College, Oxford, a famous university. He earned his first degree (BA) in 1686 and a master's degree (MA) in 1689. He later received a higher degree (DD) in 1729.
Marriage and Children
On May 29, 1707, John Newey married Ann Wheeler. Ann was the daughter of John Wheeler, who worked with iron. John and Ann had six children together:
- Mary (born 1708) later married Dr. Benjamin Hoadly, who became a Bishop of Winchester.
- John (born around 1711) became a fellow at Merton College, Oxford.

His Final Years

John Newey had a long and busy career in the church and in academics.
Becoming a Church Leader
He became a deacon on June 25, 1690. This was done by John Hough, who was the Bishop of Oxford. Later, he became a priest on May 22, 1692, with the help of Thomas Sprat, the Bishop of Rochester.
Different Roles and Positions
After becoming a priest, John Newey held many different positions:
- He worked as a curate at Beckenham starting in 1692.
- He was the Vicar at Wombourne from 1693 to 1696. He left this job because he wasn't feeling well.
- He moved to London and became the Professor of Music at Gresham College. He held this position from 1696 to 1705.
- At the same time, he was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1696. This is a very respected group for scientists and thinkers.
- He went back to his church duties. He became the Rector and then a Prebendary of Itchen Abbas in 1707. He stayed there until his death.
- He also served as Rector of Avington from 1722 to 1726.
- His most important role was becoming the Dean of Chichester. He started this job on June 21, 1728, and continued until he passed away in 1735.
