John Foncha's Political Journey

Starting His Political Path

John Ngu Foncha started his political career by creating a political party. In 1955, he founded the Kamerun National Democratic Party (KNDP). This party was very important in the British Cameroons.

On February 1, 1959, Mr. Foncha became the Premier of the British Cameroons. A Premier is like a leader of a region. He held this important job until October 1, 1961.

Leading Cameroon

On October 1, 1961, the British Cameroons joined with Francophone Cameroon. They formed a new country called the Federal Republic of Cameroon. John Foncha became the fifth Prime Minister of Cameroon at this time. He also served as the Vice-President of the new Federal Republic. He held both these big roles until May 13, 1965. He continued to be the Vice-President until 1970.

Working for Autonomy

Later in his life, in 1994, John Foncha continued to work for the people of Cameroon. He led a group called the Southern Cameroons National Council (SCNC). This group went to the United Nations. They asked for more autonomy for the two English-speaking provinces in Cameroon. Autonomy means having more self-governance or control over their own affairs.

John Ngu Foncha passed away in Bamenda on April 10, 1999. He was 82 years old. His grandson is Jean-Christian Foncha.
