Who Was John Norbury?
John Norbury was a younger son of Thomas Norbury. His family came from a place called Nantwich in Cheshire.
John Norbury's Career and Public Service
John Norbury started his career as a soldier in France in 1368. He worked for the Duke of Brittany. Later, he became an important military leader. He was the deputy Captain of Brest from 1382 to 1397. He also served as the Captain of Guînes from 1399 to 1401. His job was to help keep the peace between England and France.
In 1391, John Norbury became a Member of Parliament for Hertfordshire. During this time, he became friends with Henry Bolingbroke. Henry Bolingbroke later became King Henry IV of England.
Working for the King
When Henry Bolingbroke became King Henry IV, John Norbury gained even more important roles. He was made the Lord High Treasurer of England from 1399 to 1401. This meant he managed the country's finances. He also became the Keeper of the Privy Wardrobe from 1399 to 1405. This role involved looking after the King's personal belongings and treasures. John Norbury was also a member of the Privy Council, a group of advisors to the King. In 1406, he worked as an ambassador. His job was to negotiate a new peace agreement with France.
