John Nost Sartorius came from a family of artists. His father, Francis Sartorius, and his grandfather, John Sartorius, were also painters of horses. To make sure people didn't confuse him with his father or grandfather, he often signed his work as John N. Sartorius Jr..
Many important people of his time supported his work. These included the Prince of Wales and other wealthy sportsmen. They liked his paintings so much that you could find his art in many large country homes across England.
His Art Shows and Famous Paintings
John N. Sartorius showed his paintings at the Royal Academy in London for many years, from 1781 to 1824. He displayed 74 pictures there! You can find a list of all these paintings in a book called "Animal painters of England from the year 1650, volume 2" by Walter Gilbey.
His art was also featured in "The Sporting Magazine" between 1795 and 1827. Many of his works were turned into engravings by artists like J. Walker and J. Webb. This helped more people see and enjoy his art.
Some of his most famous paintings included portraits of well-known racehorses. He painted "Escape," which belonged to the Prince of Wales, and "Grey Diomed," owned by Sir Charles Bunbury. He also painted "Phenomena," a trotting mare, and the very famous racehorse "Eclipse." The painting of Eclipse was based on a drawing by his father.
In 1790, a collection of his works called "A Set of Four Hunting Pieces" was published. These were engravings made by Peltro William Tomkins and James Neagle from Sartorius's original paintings.

John N. Sartorius passed away in 1828. His artistic talent continued through his sons. His son, John Francis Sartorius, also became a painter of horses. Another son, Francis Sartorius Jr., was known for painting scenes of the sea and ships.
