John O'Rourke's Life and Work
John O'Rourke was born in Ireland in 1834. In 1857, he moved to the United States. He first settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In Milwaukee, O'Rourke worked as a book-keeper. This means he kept financial records for a company. He also worked for a railroad company.
During the American Civil War, O'Rourke served as a soldier. He was part of the 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He also served in the 1st Illinois Light Artillery.
After the war, he moved to Juneau County, Wisconsin. He continued his work as a book-keeper there.
In 1868, O'Rourke became a politician. He served in the Wisconsin State Assembly. This is like being a representative in the state government. He also worked as the treasurer for Juneau County. A treasurer manages the money for a county.
Later, in 1874, O'Rourke moved to Plattsmouth, Nebraska. There, he worked at the First National Bank. He also became the treasurer for the Plattsmouth Board of Trade. This group helped local businesses.
In April 1881, John O'Rourke was elected mayor of Plattsmouth. A mayor is the leader of a city. He served as mayor until 1882, shortly before he passed away. He was a member of the Democratic Party. O'Rourke died in St. Louis, Missouri.
