John P. Walters was born on February 8, 1952. He is currently the president and chief executive officer of the Hudson Institute. He started this role in January 2021. Before that, he was the chief operating officer at the same institute.
Mr. Walters is also known for his work in the United States government. He was the Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). He held this important job during the time George W. Bush was president. He worked in this position from 2001 to 2009. His main task was to help coordinate all the government's efforts and spending related to anti-drug policies.
Early Career and Education
John Walters has worked in several key government roles. He was an Assistant to the Secretary at the United States Department of Education. This was during the time Ronald Reagan was president. In this role, he helped with education policies.
He also worked closely with William Bennett, who was a director of drug policy. Mr. Walters was chief of staff for Mr. Bennett from 1989 to 1991. He then became Deputy Director for Supply Reduction until 1993.
From 1982 to 1985, Mr. Walters worked at the National Endowment for the Humanities. He helped with education programs there. He also taught political science at Michigan State University and Boston College.
Mr. Walters studied at Michigan State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He later received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Toronto.
Leading the Hudson Institute
After his time in government, John Walters joined the Hudson Institute. This is a research organization that studies public policy. He started there in 2009 as an executive vice president. He later became the chief operating officer. In 2021, he was appointed as the president and chief executive officer. In this role, he leads the institute's work.
