John Paul Spiegel (born March 17, 1911 – died July 17, 1991) was an American doctor who specialized in the mind, called a psychiatrist. He was a top expert on how people react to violence and the stress of war. He also served as the 103rd President of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), a big group for psychiatrists in America.

John Paul Spiegel was born in Chicago, Illinois. He went to Dartmouth College and finished his studies there in 1934. He then went on to get his medical degree, which means he became a doctor, in 1938 from Northwestern University School of Medicine.
His Career and Teaching
After becoming a doctor, Spiegel taught at important universities like the University of Chicago and Harvard University. He also worked as a doctor at Michael Reese Hospital.
During World War II, he helped his country by serving as a medical officer in the Army Air Corps. This means he was a doctor for soldiers in the air force. Later, he joined the teachers at Brandeis University. There, he led a special place called the Lemberg Center for the Study of Violence from 1966 to 1979. This center studied why violence happens and how to understand it.
His Family Life
John Paul Spiegel was married to Babette Shiller, who passed away in 1975. They had four children together: Adam, Heli, Mamie, and Polly. His granddaughter, Alix Spiegel, is a well-known reporter for National Public Radio. John Paul Spiegel passed away on July 17, 1991, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
