Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Peyton Sr. (1749–1829) was an English fisherman and fur trader in the Colony of Newfoundland. He played a part in the early history of Newfoundland, especially in the areas of fishing and trade.

Peyton was born in Christchurch, Dorset, England. He moved to Newfoundland in 1770. He first lived in Fogo, where he worked in cod fishing until about 1775. Later, he spent his summers at Exploits and his winters at Lower Sandy Point, located on the Bay of Exploits. He was involved in fishing for salmon and also participated in the fur trade. He even owned his own schooner, which is a type of sailing ship.

Family Life and Business

In 1788, John Peyton Sr. married Ann Galton. His wife and children stayed in Dorset, England, until 1812. Sadly, both his wife and daughter passed away that year. After this, Peyton brought his son, John Peyton Jr., to Newfoundland. His son joined him as a business partner. Together, they continued their work in fishing and trading in the Bay of Exploits area.

Interactions with the Beothuk People

In 1819, John Peyton Sr. and his son, John Peyton Jr., were part of an expedition. During this trip, they had an encounter with a Beothuk woman named Demasduwit. The Beothuk were the Indigenous people of Newfoundland. Later, another Beothuk woman, Shawnadithit, who was the last known living Beothuk, lived in the Peyton household for five years. These interactions are important parts of Newfoundland's history, showing the contact between European settlers and the Beothuk people.

Later Life and Legacy

John Peyton Sr. passed away in the Bay of Exploits in 1829. His grandson, Thomas Peyton, later became a notable figure. Thomas Peyton served in the Newfoundland assembly, which is like a government parliament. This shows how the Peyton family continued to be involved in the life of Newfoundland for generations.
