John Purcell: A Hero's Story
John Purcell was born in a place called Kilcommon in County Galway, Ireland. He joined the British Army and became a Private in a special cavalry unit called the 9th Lancers.
What is the Victoria Cross?
The Victoria Cross, often called the VC, is the most important award for bravery in the British military. It is given to soldiers who show incredible courage when facing the enemy. It is a very rare and respected medal.
A Brave Act in India
In 1857, when John Purcell was about 43 years old, a big event called the Indian Mutiny (also known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857) was happening in India. On June 19, 1857, during a battle in Delhi, John Purcell showed amazing bravery.
He was with another soldier named Thomas Hancock and a local soldier named Roopur Khan. Their commander, Brigadier J. H. Grant, had his horse shot down. Even though it was very dangerous, Purcell, Hancock, and Roopur Khan stayed with him.
They helped save important cannons and even offered their own horses to their commander. During this brave act, John Purcell's own horse was shot and killed right under him. Thomas Hancock was also badly wounded. Their actions were truly heroic and helped save lives and equipment.
His Legacy
Because of their incredible bravery, Brigadier-General Hope Grant later recommended that both Private John Purcell and Private Thomas Hancock receive the Victoria Cross. This was a huge honor for their courage.
Sadly, John Purcell was killed in action in Delhi a few weeks later, on September 19, 1857. He died a hero, remembered for his bravery and for receiving the highest award for gallantry.
