Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Ross, 2nd Lord Ross of Halkhead (died 1513) was an important Scottish nobleman. He inherited his title and lands in a time of change for Scotland. He was known for his connections with King James IV.

Early Life and Family Background

John Ross was born into a noble family from Halkhead in Renfrewshire, Scotland. His family, the Rosses of Halkhead, were a Lowland Scottish family. This means they lived in the southern, flatter parts of Scotland. They were not related to the famous Highland Ross families. John's father, Robert Ross, passed away before his own father. So, John inherited his title from his grandfather, John Ross, 1st Lord Ross. His mother was Agnes Melville, who also came from an important family.

Becoming a Lord

John Ross became the 2nd Lord Ross of Halkhead in 1501. This happened after his grandfather died. Before that, in 1496, he officially inherited lands from his mother in a place called Melville. Over the years, he gained ownership of many more estates. These lands were mostly in and around Renfrewshire and Linlithgow. Owning these lands made him a powerful figure in the region.

Life at Court and Royal Visits

Lord Ross was part of the Scottish nobility during the reign of King James IV. The King even visited Lord Ross at his home in Halkhead on April 1, 1506. It's recorded that the King bought drinks for Lord Ross's builders during this visit!

Lord Ross also spent time with the King on other occasions. In early 1508, they played games together. They even practiced shooting a culverin, which was a type of early cannon. This shows that Lord Ross was close to the King and involved in important activities of the time.

Battle of Flodden

Sadly, John Ross's life ended during a major battle. He was killed at the Battle of Flodden on September 9, 1513. This battle was a significant event in Scottish history.
