Ninian Ross, 3rd Lord Ross facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ninian Ross was an important Scottish nobleman. He was known as the 3rd Lord Ross of Halkhead. He lived a long time ago, in the 1500s.

Early Life and Family Roots

Ninian Ross was the son of John Ross, 2nd Lord Ross. His mother was Christian Edmonstone. The Ross family lived in a place called Halkhead, in Renfrewshire, Scotland. They were a "Lowland" family. This means they lived in the southern, flatter parts of Scotland. They were not related to the "Highland" Ross families or the Earls of Ross.

Public Service and Role

Ninian's father died in a big battle called the Battle of Flodden. After his father's death, Ninian took over his family's lands. This happened by 1514. He received official documents called "sasines" which proved he owned the lands.

Ninian Ross was an active nobleman. For about 25 years, he often attended the parliaments of James V of Scotland. Parliaments were like important meetings where laws were made. On June 30, 1534, he helped confirm a peace treaty between Scotland and England. A peace treaty is an agreement to stop fighting. Ninian Ross passed away in February 1555 or 1556.

Family Life

Ninian Ross married four times during his life:

Ninian Ross had several children:

  • Robert, who was called the Master of Ross. Sadly, he was killed in 1547 at the Battle of Pinkie. Robert married Agnes Moncrieff. They had a daughter named Elizabeth Ross.
    • Elizabeth Ross was a lady-in-waiting to Mary, Queen of Scots. This meant she helped the Queen.
    • On May 10, 1562, Elizabeth married John Fleming, 5th Lord Fleming. Queen Mary even paid for their wedding party!
    • The celebrations were held in Holyrood Park. There were "great triumphs," which means big shows and parties. There was even a staged sea-battle, called a naumachia. The ambassador from Sweden also attended.
  • James Ross, 4th Lord Ross
  • Hugh Ross
  • William Ross
  • Christian Ross, who married three times. Her first marriage was in 1543 to John Mure of Caldwell. Her second was in 1552 to Nicholas Ramsay of Dalhousie. Her third was before 1555 to John Weir. She died before February 1556 or 1557.
  • John Ross of Tartraven, who was a natural son. He was the ancestor of the Ross family of Kirkland.
