John William Salt (born 1941, died 2017) was a British bishop in the Anglican Church. He served as the Bishop of St Helena from 1999 to 2011. St Helena is a small island located in the South Atlantic.

His Early Life

John Salt was born in the United Kingdom. He studied at Kelham Theological College and finished his theology degree in 1965. He became a deacon in 1966 and a priest in 1967.

His first job as a priest was in the Diocese of Carlisle. He worked as a curate (an assistant priest) at St Matthew's Church in Barrow. Years later, when he was a bishop, he returned to preach there in 2007. This was to celebrate the church's 40th anniversary.

Working in Africa

In 1970, Salt moved to southern Africa. He worked in the parish of Mohales Hoek in the Diocese of Lesotho. In 1971, he became an assistant chaplain and teacher at St Agnes' School in Teyateyaneng.

After that, he worked at the Cathedral of St Mary and St James in Maseru. Maseru is the capital city of Lesotho.

In 1977, Salt was appointed as a precentor (a person who helps lead church services, especially the music) at St Cyprian's Cathedral, Kimberley. This cathedral is the main church for the Anglican Diocese of Kimberley and Kuruman. He later took charge of St Stephen's Church in Vryburg.

In 1989, Salt became the dean of Eshowe. He was also an archdeacon (a senior priest) at the Cathedral of St Michael and All Angels in Eshowe. This was part of the Anglican Diocese of Zululand.

Leading in St Helena

In 1999, John Salt became a bishop. He was chosen to lead the Diocese of St Helena. On September 26, 1999, he officially became the 14th Bishop of St Helena. The Bishop of St Helena is in charge of the churches on the islands of St Helena and Ascension.

In 2009, the diocese celebrated its 150th anniversary. On October 31, they re-enacted the arrival of St Helena's first bishop, Piers Claughton. Bishop Salt was rowed ashore, just as Bishop Claughton would have been 150 years earlier. People on the island were impressed by his bravery, especially because the weather was not good.

Bishop Salt also continued the work of the previous bishop, John Ruston. He supported the "Citizenship Commission." This group worked to help people from St Helena get their full rights as British citizens.

Retirement and Later Life

John Salt retired as Bishop of St Helena in March 2011. He had served for more than 11 years. He then moved back to his home country, England.

He lived in Walsingham, Norfolk. Even in retirement, he stayed active in the church. He often helped at the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham. He passed away on February 7, 2017, in Walsingham, at the age of 75.
