Early Life and Business
We first hear about Sir John Shadworth in May 1371. At that time, he was helping to manage the will of a man named Thomas Bushey. John Shadworth also learned his trade as an apprentice with a Mercer named Thomas Cornerth. A Mercer was someone who traded in fine cloths and textiles.
A few years later, Sir John was involved in a disagreement over property in Great Yarmouth. This dispute was investigated by a special group set up by the king. However, it seems the matter was resolved without major problems. In fact, by June 1382, Sir John was working alongside the person he had the dispute with. They were both checking business records together.
His Legacy
Sir John Shadworth died in 1430. He never married or had children. He was a very wealthy man. He decided to leave most of his large fortune to support good causes and charitable work. This shows he cared about helping others.
Sir John was buried in a special vault inside St Mildred, Bread Street church. Many years later, in 1898, some remains from the church were moved to Brookwood Cemetery.
