John St Clair was an important Scottish noble who lived in the 1400s. He held several important titles, including Lord Herdmanston, Baron of Carfrae, and Lord of Polwarth and Kimmerghame. Being a noble meant he was part of a powerful family with land and influence in Scotland.
John was the son of William St Clair, who was also Lord Herdmanston. In 1446, John St Clair helped during the siege of Edinburgh Castle, which was a big event at the time. He was paid for his services during this important historical moment.
Passing on the Family Lands
John St Clair had several children. His oldest son, also named John, sadly passed away before him. This older son had two daughters, Mariota and Margaret.
When John St Clair passed away, his lands and titles needed to be passed on. Because his eldest son had already died, the family estates were divided into two main parts. After some discussions and agreements between the families involved, the Herdmanston estates went to John's second son, William St Clair.
The other parts of the land were given to his granddaughters' husbands. Mariota's husband, George Hume of Wedderburn, received the lands of Polwarth. Margaret's husband, Patrick Hume, received the lands of Kimmerghame. This way, the family's important properties continued to be managed, even though they were split up.
