John Stewart, 2nd Lord of Aubigny and Concressault (who died in 1482) was an important nobleman from both Scotland and France. He was known for his service to the French kings.
Life of John Stewart
John Stewart was the younger son of John Stewart of Darnley and Elizabeth of Lennox. His father died in 1429 at the Battle of the Herrings. After his father's death, John's older brother, Sir Alan Stewart of Darnley, received the family lands and titles in Scotland.
However, Alan gave up his French titles. He passed them to his younger brother, John. This was approved by Charles VII of France, the King of France. John then became the Lord of Aubigny and Concressault. These were important noble titles in France.
John Stewart served as a captain in the Garde Écossaise. This was a special group of 100 Scottish soldiers. They protected the French kings. He served under King Charles VII and later under his son, King Louis XI.
In 1469, John Stewart was given a special honor. He became one of the first knights of the Order of Saint Michael. This was a very important order of chivalry in France. John Stewart passed away in 1482.
Family and Marriage
Around 1446, John Stewart married a woman named Béatrix d'Apchier. She was the daughter of Bérault, who was the Seigneur d'Apchier.
