John Strode (1524 – 2 September 1581) was an important person in Dorset, England. He was the son of Robert Strode and Elizabeth Hody. John Strode became a MP for Dorset in 1572. He also served as the Sheriff of Dorset from 1572 to 1573.

John Strode's Life and Work

John Strode was born in 1524. He was the oldest son of Robert Strode of Parnham and Elizabeth Hody. His father passed away in 1559.

By 1560, John Strode was a captain of musters. This meant he was in charge of local groups of soldiers. He also worked as a commissioner of concealed lands. This job involved finding lands that were secretly owned but should have belonged to the Crown. From 1572 to 1573, he was the Sheriff of Dorset. This was a very important role, like being the chief law enforcement officer for the county. Around 1575, he became a Justice of the Peace. This meant he acted as a local judge.

In his later years, John Strode helped with many important tasks. He looked into how taverns and grain supplies were managed in Lyme Regis. He also hosted important people, like the Earl of Bedford, at Bridport. He helped investigate crimes, such as horse theft. In 1578, the Privy Council asked him to investigate a disagreement between two important families. The Privy Council was a group of advisors to the Queen. In 1580, they praised him for his hard work. He had been looking into the case of Lady Tregonwell. She was a "recusant," meaning she did not attend the official Church of England services.

John Strode passed away on September 2, 1581. He left a large sum of money, £1,400, to his children. His oldest son, Robert, who was about 22, took care of his father's estate.
