John Swinfen (born March 19, 1613 – died April 12, 1694) was an English politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like the main law-making body in England, at different times between 1645 and 1691. He supported the Parliamentary side during the English Civil War, working to help their cause.

Swinfen was likely the son of Richard Swinfen from Swinfen, Staffordshire. He went to Pembroke College, Cambridge and finished his studies in 1632.

Early Political Life

In 1645, John Swinfen was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Stafford. This was during a time known as the Long Parliament. However, in 1648, he was removed from Parliament during a big political event. He also worked as one of the special representatives for Parliament in Staffordshire.

A Long Career in Parliament

John Swinfen had a very long career in politics.

  • In 1659, he was elected as an MP for Tamworth. This was for the Third Protectorate Parliament.
  • The next year, in 1660, he was elected MP for Stafford again. This time it was for the Convention Parliament.
  • In 1661, he was elected MP for Tamworth once more. He stayed in this role for a long time, until 1679. This period was known as the Cavalier Parliament.
  • He was re-elected for Tamworth in 1681 and served until 1685.
  • Finally, in 1690, he was elected MP for Bere Alston. He served there until 1691.

Personal Life and Legacy

John Swinfen lived at Swinfen Hall, which was near Freeford. People often called him "Russet-coat." This nickname came from his simple way of dressing. He passed away when he was 81 years old and was buried in Weeford, Staffordshire.

He was married to Ann Brandreth. Her parents were John Brandreth and Jane Weston.
