John Thomas Fowlkes Jr. was born on April 20, 1951. He is a very experienced judge in the United States. He works as a senior judge for the Western District of Tennessee.
Early Life and Career
John Fowlkes Jr. was born in Washington, D.C.. He went to Valparaiso University and earned a degree in 1975. Later, he studied law at the University of Denver School of Law. He became a lawyer in 1977.
His first job was helping people who couldn't afford a lawyer. This was in Memphis, Tennessee. From 1979 to 1989, he worked as a prosecutor. He helped the government in court cases.
After that, he worked for the U.S. government as a lawyer. He did this from 1989 to 2002. He also served as a top leader for the Shelby County government. From 2007 to 2012, he was a judge in the Shelby County Criminal Court.
Becoming a Federal Judge
In 2011, President Barack Obama chose John Fowlkes Jr. to be a federal judge. This means he would work for the United States government. He would serve in the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee.
Before he could become a judge, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a meeting. They asked him questions in March 2012. In July 2012, the Senate voted to approve him. Most senators voted yes.
He officially became a judge on August 1, 2012. On September 1, 2022, he became a "senior judge." This means he can still hear cases but has a lighter workload.
