Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John T. Lis is a well-known scientist. He was born in Willimantic, Connecticut. He is a professor at Cornell University. He teaches about molecular biology and genetics. In 2000, he received a special award called a Guggenheim Fellowship. This was for his work on how genes work. He also gave the Harvey Lecture in 2018.

What Dr. Lis Studies

Dr. Lis has worked at Cornell University for a long time. He became a full professor in 1991. Many important groups have supported his research. These include the National Institutes of Health and the American Cancer Society. The March of Dimes and Procter & Gamble also helped.

Dr. Lis leads a special lab called the Lis Lab. His team studies how genes are controlled. They look at how genes turn on and off. They often study "heat shock genes." These genes become very active when cells are stressed. This helps them understand how all genes work in living things.

His Education

Dr. Lis studied Chemistry at Fairfield University. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1970. He then went to Brandeis University. There, he earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1975.

After that, he did more research at Stanford University. This was from 1975 to 1978. He focused on how genes work in fruit flies, called Drosophila. He also studied the structure of chromosomes. A group called the Helen Hay Whitney Foundation supported him during this time.
