John Thomas Serres was born in London in December 1759. His father, Dominic Serres, was also a very well-known painter and helped start the Royal Academy. John learned a lot about art from his father. He even helped with a book called Liber Nauticus, which was a guide for painters who wanted to draw ships and the sea.

Soon, John became a successful artist on his own. He showed more than 100 of his paintings at important art places like the Royal Academy and the British Institution.

Travels and Royal Connections

In the early 1790s, John went on a long trip. He traveled along the coasts of France and Italy, visiting cities like Paris, Genoa, Florence, Rome, and Naples. During his travels, he made many sketches of the places he saw.

He also became a drawing teacher at the Royal Naval College in Chelsea. After his father passed away, John was chosen to be the Marine Painter to the King in 1793. This was a very important job!

Later, Serres worked for the British Navy. He was an artist with the Channel Squadron during a time when they were watching the port of Brest between 1799 and 1800.

Challenges and Later Years

John Serres' successful career faced difficulties because of his wife, Olivia Serres. She believed she was the secret daughter of a royal family member, the Duke of Cumberland. She publicly tried to claim money from his family, even insisting people call her "Princess Olive of Cumberland."

Because of these public claims, John lost favor with the royal court. To try and earn money, he invested in the theater. In 1818, he helped set up the Royal Coburg Theatre, which is now known as the "Old Vic." However, his wife's activities continued to cause him financial problems. He sadly passed away in December 1825 in a London prison for people who couldn't pay their debts.

His daughter, Lavinia Ryves, spent much of her life trying to continue her mother's claims to the royal family's money. She even took her case to the House of Lords, but she was not successful.
