The Story of the John Tigard House
How Tigard Got Its Name
In 1852, a man named Wilson Tigard traveled the famous Oregon Trail. He settled in the area that is now Washington County, Oregon. This place was first called Tigardville, named after him. Later, the name was shortened to Tigard.
Building and Saving the House
Wilson Tigard's oldest son, John, built this house in 1880. It was located where Gaarde Street and Oregon Route 99W meet today. Over many years, the house started to get old and worn down. By the 1970s, it was in rough shape.
A group of people in Tigard decided to save the house. They formed the Tigard Historical Association. In 1978, they carefully moved the house to its current spot. This new location is on Canterbury Lane at 103rd. After the move, the group worked hard to fix up and restore the old home.
Becoming a Historic Landmark
In April 1979, a special committee in Oregon suggested that the John Tigard House should be on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historical buildings in the United States. On July 20, 1979, the house was officially added to this list.
Since then, the John Tigard House has been a place for many community events. For example, it hosted an apple harvest festival in September 2007.
What's Inside and Outside
The John Tigard House is a one-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It shows off the Queen Anne style with some Carpenter Gothic details. The house has three bedrooms.
Today, it serves as a museum for the Tigard Historical Society. The half-story part of the house is an attic. This space is used to store old items and artifacts from the historical society. Outside, the yard has an apple orchard. Every December, the house is decorated beautifully for Christmas. The museum is free to visit and has an open house each month.
