The John Tigard House is a special home built way back in 1880 in Tigard, Oregon. It was first owned by John Tigard, whose dad, Wilson Tigard, helped start the town of Tigard. This house is built in the beautiful Queen Anne design. It was moved from its first spot near Oregon Route 99W in 1978 to keep it safe. Now, it's a cool museum! It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, which means it's an important historical building.

Discovering the John Tigard House History

In 1852, a man named Wilson Tigard traveled all the way to Oregon on the famous Oregon Trail. He settled in what is now Washington County, Oregon. The town was first called Tigardville, named after him, and later it became just Tigard. Wilson's oldest son, John Tigard, built this house in 1880. It was located where Gaarde Street and Oregon Route 99W meet today. Over many years, the house started to get old and needed a lot of care by the 1970s.

Saving a Historic Home in Tigard

In the 1970s, some people in Tigard really wanted to save the house from being torn down. So, they created a group called the Tigard Historical Association. In 1978, they carefully moved the house to its current spot on Canterbury Lane at 103rd. After the big move, the group worked hard to fix up and restore the old home. In April 1979, experts on historic places in Oregon suggested the house should be recognized nationally. On July 20, 1979, the John Tigard House was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. Since then, the house has been used for many fun events, like an apple harvest festival in September 2007.

This house is a one-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It shows off the fancy Queen Anne design, with some cool Carpenter Gothic touches too. Inside, the house has three bedrooms. Today, it serves as a museum run by the Tigard Historical Society. The "half story" is actually an attic space. This attic is used to store interesting old items that tell the story of the area. Outside, the yard even has an apple orchard! Every December, the house gets decorated beautifully for Christmas. You can visit this museum for free during its open house each month.
