John Trenchard (1586 – 1662) was an English politician from Warmwell, near Dorchester. He was a member of the House of Commons at different times between 1621 and 1659. This means he helped make laws and decisions for England during a very important period in its history.

Early Life

John Trenchard was born in Charminster, which is also near Dorchester. His father was Sir George Trenchard of Warmwell, and his mother was Ann Speke. Her father was Sir George Speke.

Serving in Parliament

John Trenchard began his political career in 1621. He was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Wareham. An MP is like a representative who speaks for the people of their area in Parliament.

He was re-elected as the MP for Wareham in 1624 and again in 1625. This shows that the people of Wareham trusted him to represent them.

A Busy Time in Politics

England was going through many changes during Trenchard's time. He continued to be an important figure in Parliament.

In April 1640, he was elected again for Wareham in what was known as the Short Parliament. Later that year, in November 1640, he was elected once more for Wareham to the Long Parliament. He served in this Parliament until 1653.

After that, he represented Dorset in the First Protectorate Parliament in 1653 and the Second Protectorate Parliament in 1656. His last time serving was in 1659, when he represented Weymouth in the Restored Rump Parliament.

Family and Later Life

John Trenchard passed away in London in 1662. He was buried back home in Warmwell.

He was married to Jane Rodney. Her father was Sir John Rodney. John and Jane had children, including two daughters named Jane and Grace. His daughter Jane married a man named John Sadler, who was a Master at Magdalene College, Cambridge. His other daughter, Grace, married William Sydenham.
