John Tuchet, 6th Baron Audley (born 1423 – died 26 September 1490) was an important English politician. He held the title of Baron Audley, which was a noble rank. He lived during a time of great change in England, known as the Wars of the Roses.

Early Life and Family

John Tuchet was born in 1423. His father was James Tuchet, 5th Baron Audley. When his father passed away in 1459, John inherited the title of Baron Audley. This meant he became a lord and had a role in English politics.

John Tuchet married Ann Echyngham. Together, they had seven children. His eldest son, James Tuchet, 7th Baron Audley, later inherited his title.

Role in the Wars of the Roses

The Wars of the Roses were a series of civil wars in England. They were fought between two powerful families, the House of York and the House of Lancaster. John Tuchet was initially involved in these conflicts.

In 1460, he was captured by the Earl of Warwick in Calais. This city was then part of the English kingdom. While a prisoner, John met Edward IV, who would later become king. Edward convinced John to switch his loyalty to the Yorkist side.

In 1472, John Tuchet was present when King Edward gave the title of Earl of Winchester to Louis de Gruuthuse, a nobleman from another country.

Lord High Treasurer

Later, in December 1484, King Richard III appointed John Tuchet as the Lord High Treasurer. This was a very important job. The Lord High Treasurer was in charge of the King's money and the country's finances. He took over this role from Sir John Wood.

Later Life and Death

John Tuchet passed away on 26 September 1490. He was buried in Shere, a village in Surrey, England. His son, Sir James Tuchet, became the 7th Baron Audley after him. John's wife, Anne, lived longer than him. She was buried in Bermondsey.
