A Knight in Wartime
When the Wars of the Roses began, James Tuchet played a big part. This was a series of civil wars in England. It was fought between two families, the House of Lancaster and the House of York. James Tuchet supported the Lancastrian side.
He gathered soldiers from his lands in Cheshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, and Derbyshire. His job was to stop the Yorkist army. The Yorkist army was led by the Earl of Salisbury. Salisbury wanted to join forces with other Yorkist troops in Ludlow.
The Battle of Blore Heath
The two armies met at the Battle of Blore Heath. This important battle took place on 23 September 1459. During the fight, Baron Audley was killed. He was struck down by a knight named Sir Roger Kynaston. Kynaston later added parts of Audley's family crest to his own.
A monument called Audley's Cross still stands today. It marks the exact spot on the battlefield where James Tuchet died.
After the battle, James Tuchet was buried. His resting place was at Darley Abbey, near Derby. This abbey was about 40 miles (64 km) from Blore Heath. Today, the abbey no longer exists. So, his burial spot is not marked anymore.
