John Willard Peterson (born November 1, 1921 – died September 20, 2006) was a very important songwriter who wrote many Christian songs. His music had a big impact on Christian music from the 1950s to the 1970s. He wrote over 1000 songs and 35 longer musical pieces called cantatas.

John Willard Peterson was born in Lindsborg, Kansas. During World War II, he served as a pilot in the Army Air Force. He flew planes over a dangerous route called the China Hump.

After the war, he studied at Moody Bible Institute. He also worked on the radio staff there for several years.

His Musical Journey

In 1953, John graduated from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. Soon after, he moved to Pennsylvania to keep writing songs. Later, he moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. For over ten years, he was the President and Editor-in-Chief of Singspiration. This was a company that published sacred music.

While at Singspiration, he put together a hymnal called Great Hymns of the Faith (1961). A hymnal is a book of hymns, which are religious songs. This book included 47 of his own songs. He also worked with popular Christian musicians like Bill Pearce.

Later Life and Legacy

John Willard Peterson later lived in Scottsdale, Arizona. He continued to write music there. He passed away on September 20, 2006, at the age of 84, after an illness.

John Willard Peterson wrote many well-known songs. Some of his popular titles include "It Took a Miracle" and "Heaven Came Down." He also wrote "Surely Goodness and Mercy" and "This is the day that the Lord hath made."

His longer musical pieces, called cantatas, include Night of Miracles and Down From His Glory. He also created a musical called "Jesus is Coming."

In 1986, John Willard Peterson was honored for his work. He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. This shows how important his music was to many people.
