John Warren Moore (1826–1879) was an important person from Mobile, Alabama. He was a brave officer in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. After the war, he became a farmer and also served as a Sheriff in Mobile County, Alabama. He was present at the famous Battle of Atlanta.

Early Life and Family

John Warren Moore was born in April 1826 in Alabama. His father was John Moore Sr., and his mother was Nicey Turner from Mobile, Alabama. In 1847, John married Mahala Ann Roberts. Her family, the Roberts, were among the first settlers in Jackson County, Mississippi.

John and Mahala had several children. Their children included John Percy, Eugene, Martha Ann, Mahala Elizabeth, and twins Joseph and Mascalia.

Military Service

During the American Civil War, John W. Moore served in the Confederate Army. He was a Quartermaster for the 9th Mississippi Cavalry. This means he was in charge of supplies for his unit. He also served with the 17th Mississippi Cavalry. He was present at the important Battle of Atlanta.

Life as a Farmer and Sheriff

After his military service, John Moore became a farmer. He lived in the western part of Mobile County, Alabama. From 1859 until his death, he worked as a Deputy Sheriff and then as the Sheriff for the county.

John Moore owned a farm of about 140 acres (0.57 square kilometers). His land was near what is now Tanner-Williams Road. There was a disagreement over his land with the railroad company. It took many years, but his family eventually received payment for the land in 1895.
