John Williams was an important leader at Jesus College, Oxford, from 1602 to 1613. He also held a high position as the Dean of Bangor. He lived a long time ago, in the late 1500s and early 1600s.

Early Life and Education

John Williams was born in a place called Llansawel, which is in Carmarthenshire, Wales. When he was young, he went to Corpus Christi College, Oxford, in 1569. This was a big step for his education.

He worked hard and earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (BA), in 1573 or 1574. A few years later, in 1577, he got his Master of Arts (MA) degree. After that, in 1579, he was chosen to be a Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. Being a Fellow meant he was a senior member of the college, often involved in teaching and research.

Career and Leadership Roles

After finishing his studies, John Williams became a priest. In 1594, he was given the job of rector in a town called Llandrinio, in Montgomeryshire. A rector is a type of priest who leads a local church.

At the same time, he also became the Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity. This was a very important teaching role at the university, where he taught about religious studies. He held this teaching job until he passed away.

John Williams continued to rise in his career. In 1590, he became a Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford. Later, in 1602, he was chosen to be the Principal of Jesus College. The Principal is like the head or leader of the college.

He also took on other big responsibilities. In 1604, he became the Vice-Chancellor of the entire University of Oxford. This meant he helped run the whole university. The next year, in 1605, he was made the Dean of Bangor. A Dean is a senior priest who leads a cathedral.

Later Life and Legacy

John Williams passed away on September 4, 1613. He was buried at St Michael's Church, Oxford. He is remembered for his important roles in both education and the church during his lifetime.
