John Wingfield (born 1560, died 1626) was an English politician. He was a member of the English Parliament at different times between 1597 and 1626.

John Wingfield came from a well-known family. His father was Robert Wingfield of Upton, Northamptonshire. His mother was Elizabeth Cecil, whose father, Richard Cecil, was an important courtier. John went to Westminster School and then studied at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1578.

Early Life and Public Service

John Wingfield started his public service early. Around 1583, he became a Justice of the Peace for Kesteven in Lincolnshire. This meant he helped keep law and order in the area. From 1594 to 1600, he worked as an official who managed land for the King in Lincolnshire. This job helped him buy land in Rutland.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

John Wingfield was elected to Parliament several times. In 1597, he became a Member of Parliament for Peterborough. Later, he was elected to represent Stamford in 1621. His last election was in 1626, when he became the MP for Grantham.

Family Life

John Wingfield was married twice and had several children. His first wife was Elizabeth Gresham. She brought him the manor (a large estate) of Tickencote in Rutland, which became his main home. They had at least three sons and one daughter. Elizabeth passed away in 1602.

After Elizabeth's death, John married Margaret Blyth. She was a widow and the daughter of Robert Thorold. John and Margaret had two sons and three daughters together.

His Brother's Political Career

John Wingfield's older brother, Robert Wingfield, was also a politician. Robert was born in 1558 and passed away in 1609. He served as a Member of Parliament for Stamford from 1584 to 1604.

Later Years and Legacy

John Wingfield passed away around the age of 66. He was buried in St Peter's Church, Tickencote, a church in the area where he lived. His life showed how people from important families could serve their country in Parliament during that time.
