The John and Edna Truesdell Fischer Farmstead is a special old farm in Canton Township, Michigan. It includes a house and other farm buildings. The main house, built in 1897, is known for its beautiful Queen Anne style. It is also sometimes called the Michael and Catherine Hasselbach Fischer House. This farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 because of its important history.
What the Farm Looks Like
The John and Edna Truesdell Fischer Farmstead covers about ten acres of land. It has many buildings. These include the main 1897 Queen Anne house. There is also a ranch-style house built in 1945.
The farm also has 18 greenhouses. Greenhouses are special buildings made of glass. They are used to grow plants, especially for selling them. There is also a boiler house and a modern garage. You can still see parts of an old barn, a silo, and a milkhouse on the property. The greenhouses were built in the 1940s for market farming. This means they grew crops to sell.
The Queen Anne House
The 1897 Queen Anne style house is a great example of this type of architecture. It has a unique cross shape. The outside of the house has special details. These include "fishscale shingles" and lovely bay windows. This style of house was not very common in the local area back then. Most farmhouses were built in simpler styles.
A Look at the Farm's History
Michael Fischer came to the United States in 1847. He was 14 years old and came from Wurttemberg, Germany. His wife, Catherine Hasselbach, came from Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, in 1852.
The couple settled in a place called Sheldon Corners. Michael started a blacksmith shop there. In 1862, they bought the land where this farm now stands. They built a house on the property. Later, in 1897, their son John built the beautiful Queen Anne house. The high quality of this house shows how successful and well-off these second-generation farmers had become.
