John de Carrick lived in the 1300s and passed away around 1380. He was from Carrick, Scotland. John was an important person in Scotland. He served as the Chancellor of Scotland and was chosen to be a Bishop (though he didn't become one).

We don't know much about where John de Carrick came from. But it seems his family was connected to the old leaders of Carrick. He also studied canon law, which is the law used by the Christian Church. We don't know which university he attended.

John's Early Career

In the early 1360s, John de Carrick worked as the Chancellor for the diocese of Glasgow. A diocese is an area managed by a bishop. At this time, William Rae was the bishop there. John also held a position at Moffat parish church. This meant he received income from the church.

John became friends with Archibald the Grim. Archibald was a powerful lord in Galloway. With Archibald's help, John started working for the king.

Working for the King

During the 1360s, John de Carrick took on several important jobs for the king. He was the Clerk of the Wardrobe. This role involved managing the king's household expenses. He also became the Keeper of the Privy Seal. The Privy Seal was a special stamp used to approve important royal documents.

In 1370, John became the Chancellor of Scotland. This was a very high position. The Chancellor was the king's chief minister and legal advisor. Even when David II of Scotland died and Robert II of Scotland became king in 1371, John kept his job as Chancellor.

Bishop-Elect of Dunkeld

In 1370, the king chose John de Carrick to become the new bishop of Dunkeld. The previous bishop, John Luce, had died. However, John de Carrick needed approval from the Pope. The Pope did not approve John for the role. Instead, the Pope chose Michael de Monymusk to be the Bishop of Dunkeld.

John de Carrick continued to work for the king until 1377. After that, he was allowed to retire. He received money from the town of Lanark to support himself. John de Carrick likely passed away in 1380.
