John de Courcy was the oldest son of Patrick de Courcy and Mary FitzGerald. His father was the 20th Baron Kingsale. The de Courcy family were known as "Old English." This means they were descendants of Normans who came to Ireland many centuries ago. They traced their family line back to John de Courcy, who arrived in Ireland in 1176.
John's mother, Mary FitzGerald, was the daughter of John Oge FitzGerald. Her family, the FitzGeralds of Dromana, were also "Old English." They were a branch of the powerful FitzGerald family of Desmond.
John's parents married when his father was 48 years old. They had many children, but only seven of them are well-known by name.

- Almeric (1664–1720), who became the 23rd Baron.
- William.
They also had at least one daughter:
- Ellen, who married Sir John Magrath.
