John de Courcy (died 1667) was a nobleman in Ireland. He held the title of the 21st Baron Kingsale. This meant he was a member of the Irish House of Lords, which was part of the Irish Parliament, from 1661 to 1666.

John de Courcy's Family History

John de Courcy was the oldest son of Patrick de Courcy and Mary FitzGerald. His father was the 20th Baron Kingsale. The de Courcy family were known as "Old English." This means they were descendants of Normans who came to Ireland many centuries ago. They traced their family line back to John de Courcy, who arrived in Ireland in 1176.

John's mother, Mary FitzGerald, was the daughter of John Oge FitzGerald. Her family, the FitzGeralds of Dromana, were also "Old English." They were a branch of the powerful FitzGerald family of Desmond.

John's parents married when his father was 48 years old. They had many children, but only seven of them are well-known by name.

John's Brothers and Sisters

John was the oldest of four known brothers:

  • John (died 1667)
  • Edmund, who did not have any children.
  • Miles, who married Elizabeth Sadleir. He was the father of Gerard de Courcy, 24th Baron Kingsale.
  • Gerald, who also did not have any children.

John also had three known sisters:

  • Alice, who married Dermod MacCarthy.
  • Elizabeth, who married David Sarsfield, 3rd Viscount Sarsfield.
  • Margaret, who married Phillip Barry Oge.

John's Early Life

John's father was the Baron Kingsale from about 1642 until 1663. This period included a time of war in Ireland, known as the Irish Rebellion of 1641. It also covered the eight years when Oliver Cromwell ruled Ireland, and then the time when the king was restored to power.

Marriage and Children

John de Courcy married Ellen. She was the daughter of Charles MacCarthy Reagh and the granddaughter of Donal MacCarthy Reagh of Kilbrittain.

John and Ellen had three sons:

  • Patrick (1660–1669), who became the 22nd Baron after his father.
  • Almeric (1664–1720), who became the 23rd Baron.
  • William.

They also had at least one daughter:

  • Ellen, who married Sir John Magrath.

Becoming the 21st Baron

John became the 21st Baron Kingsale in 1663, after his father passed away. He officially took his place in the Irish House of Lords on November 9, 1665. As a Baron, he was a member of the nobility and had a voice in the laws and decisions made in Ireland.

Death

John de Courcy, 21st Baron Kingsale, died on May 19, 1667. He passed away from a disease called smallpox. His oldest son, Patrick, who was only seven years old, became the next Baron Kingsale.
