John of Sutherland was a Scottish nobleman who lived in the 14th century. He was also known as John, Master of Sutherland. He was born in 1344 and passed away in 1361.

John was the only son of William de Moravia, 5th Earl of Sutherland. His mother was Margaret Bruce, who was the daughter of Robert the Bruce, a famous Scottish king. Sadly, historical records suggest that John's mother, Margaret, died shortly after he was born.

A Royal Hostage

When John was only about six or seven years old, he played an important role in Scottish history. His uncle, David II of Scotland, was captured by the English during the Battle of Durham.

To help King David return to Scotland, young John was sent to England as a hostage. A hostage is a person held to make sure someone else keeps a promise. John was released when King David agreed to return to captivity in England.

Life and Death

John of Sutherland was expected to become the next king of Scotland. King David II had no children, so John was next in line for the throne.

However, John became ill and died in 1361. He passed away in London, England. Many historians believe he died from the Black Death, a terrible plague that spread across Europe at that time.

Because John died, he could not become king. Instead, his uncle, King David II, was succeeded by his nephew, Robert II of Scotland.
