John Gottselig (born June 24, 1906 – died May 15, 1986) was a professional ice hockey player. He played as a left winger for 16 seasons. All of his seasons were with the Chicago Black Hawks in the NHL.
John Gottselig was one of the first players from the Russian Empire to play in the NHL. He was a very important part of the Black Hawks team.
Playing for the Black Hawks
John Gottselig spent his entire NHL playing career with the Chicago Black Hawks. He was a key player for the team. He helped them win the Stanley Cup two times. The first win was in 1934. The second win happened in 1938.
He became the captain of the Black Hawks team. This happened just before they won their second Stanley Cup. Being a captain means you are the leader of the team.
After His Playing Career
John Gottselig retired from playing hockey in 1945. But he didn't leave the Black Hawks! He became their coach in 1944. This was a big deal because he was the first coach born in Europe in NHL history. He coached the team for several seasons.
Later, he also worked as the Director of Public Relations for the Black Hawks. He was still with the team when they won another Stanley Cup in 1961. Even though his name wasn't on the Cup for that win, he was part of the winning team.
