Playing Basketball Before the Pros
High School and College Years
Johnny Newman was born in Danville, Virginia. He went to George Washington High School in Danville. There, he played basketball for the Eagles team. His coach, Harry Johnson, is a local Hall of Famer. After high school, Newman continued his basketball journey at the University of Richmond. He was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.
Newman finished his college career at Richmond in 1986. He became the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,383 points. He was known for his excellent shooting skills in college. He made 53.2% of his shots from the field and 80% of his free throws.
NCAA Tournament Appearances
Newman led the Richmond Spiders to the NCAA Tournament twice. In the 1984 Tournament, his team was a 12th seed, meaning they were not expected to win. However, they surprised everyone by beating the 5th-seeded Auburn Tigers. That Auburn team had Charles Barkley, who later became a Basketball Hall-of-Famer. Richmond then lost in the second round to the Indiana Hoosiers.
In the 1986 NCAA Tournament, Richmond was an 11th seed. They lost in the first round to Saint Joseph's. After his successful college career, Newman was chosen by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1986 NBA draft. He was the 29th player picked overall in the second round.
Johnny Newman's NBA Career
Starting in the NBA
The Cleveland Cavaliers had a great draft in 1986. They picked future All-Stars like Mark Price, Brad Daugherty, and Ron Harper. Since Harper and Newman played the same position, Newman did not play much in his first year. He spent most of his rookie season on the bench.
Playing for the New York Knicks
For the 1987–1988 season, Newman joined the New York Knicks. He slowly earned his way into the starting lineup. With teammates Mark Jackson and Patrick Ewing, Newman helped the Knicks reach the playoffs. He averaged 19.0 points per game in their first-round series against the Boston Celtics. He even scored 34 points in one game.
In the 1988–89 season, Newman became an even more important part of the starting team. He averaged 16.0 points per game. He helped the Knicks win the Atlantic Division title in the NBA.
Moving to Other Teams
After the 1989–90 season, Newman signed with the Charlotte Hornets. This team was new, only in its third year. Later, after the 2000–01 NBA season, Newman was traded from the New Jersey Nets. He was traded along with Stephon Marbury in a deal that brought Jason Kidd to the Nets.
Johnny Newman scored a total of 12,740 points during his NBA career. In 2011, he was honored by being inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
