College Basketball Star
Johnny Newman was born in Danville, Virginia. He attended George Washington High School in Danville. He played for the Eagles under coach Harry Johnson. After high school, he played college basketball at the University of Richmond.
Newman graduated from Richmond in 1986. He became the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,383 points. He was known for his excellent shooting skills in college. He had a .532 career field goal percentage. His career free throw percentage was .800.
Newman led the Richmond Spiders to the NCAA Tournament twice. In the 1984 Tournament, Richmond was a 12th-seeded underdog. They surprised the 5th-seeded Auburn Tigers in the first round. Auburn's team included future Hall-of-Famer Charles Barkley. Richmond then lost to the Indiana Hoosiers in the second round.
In the 1986 NCAA Tournament, Richmond was seeded 11th. They lost in the first round to Saint Joseph's. After his college career, Newman was chosen by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was the 29th overall pick in the second round of the 1986 NBA draft.
Playing in the NBA
The Cleveland Cavaliers had a great 1986 NBA draft. They picked future All-Stars like Mark Price, Brad Daugherty, and Ron Harper. Since Harper and Newman played the same position, Newman spent his first year on the bench.
Newman joined the New York Knicks for the 1987–1988 season. He slowly earned a spot in the starting lineup. With teammates Mark Jackson and Patrick Ewing, Newman helped the Knicks reach the playoffs. He averaged 19.0 points per game in their first-round loss to the Boston Celtics. In the 1988–89 season, Newman became an even bigger part of the starting team. He averaged 16.0 points per game. He also helped the Knicks win the NBA's Atlantic Division title.
After the 1989–90 season, Newman signed with the Charlotte Hornets. This team was an expansion franchise, only in its third year. Later in his career, Newman was traded from the New Jersey Nets. This happened after the 2000–01 NBA season. He was traded with Stephon Marbury in exchange for Jason Kidd.
Johnny Newman scored a total of 12,740 points in his NBA career. In 2011, Newman was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
