Johnstown, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Johnstown is a small, unincorporated community located in the northeastern part of Bates County, Missouri, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's usually managed by the county. Johnstown is situated on Missouri Route D, very close to the border between Bates and Henry counties. The city of Butler is about 13 miles to the west-southwest. A stream called North Deepwater Creek flows near the community's southwest side.

History of Johnstown

Johnstown has a simple but interesting history. A post office, which is a place where people send and receive mail, was first opened in Johnstown in 1856. This post office served the community for many years, helping residents stay connected. It remained in operation until 1916, when it eventually closed. The community received its name, Johnstown, because many of the very first settlers who moved to the area shared the first name "John."
