Jon Hedley Trickett (born 2 July 1950) is a British politician from the Labour Party. He has been a Member of Parliament (MP) since 1996. An MP is someone elected to represent a specific area in the UK Parliament.

Jon Trickett currently represents the area of Normanton and Hemsworth. Before 2024, he was the MP for Hemsworth. He has held important roles, such as Shadow Lord President of the Council and Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office. He also helped lead the Labour Party's campaigns as the National Campaign Coordinator from 2015 to 2017.

He worked closely with former Prime Minister Gordon Brown from 2008 to 2010. Later, he joined the Shadow Cabinet under Labour leader Ed Miliband. The Shadow Cabinet is a group of senior politicians from the main opposition party who challenge the government. Jon Trickett is also part of the Socialist Campaign Group, which is a group of Labour MPs with similar political views.

Jon Trickett's Early Life and Education

Jon Trickett was born in Leeds, England, on 2 July 1950. He went to Roundhay Grammar School, which is now called Roundhay School. He studied politics at the University of Hull and later earned a master's degree in political sociology from the University of Leeds.

He became interested in politics during the Anti-Vietnam War movement in the late 1960s. He joined the Labour Party in 1969. For many years, from 1974 to 1986, he worked as a builder and plumber.

Starting His Political Career

Jon Trickett began his career in local government. He was first elected to Leeds City Council in 1984, representing the Beeston area. A city council makes decisions about local services like schools, roads, and parks.

In 1989, he became the Leader of Leeds City Council. He held this important position until 1996, when he was elected to the UK Parliament.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

His Time in Parliament (1996-2010)

Jon Trickett was first elected as an MP for Hemsworth in a special election in 1996. He won with a large number of votes. He was re-elected in the general elections of 1997, 2001, and 2005.

Early in his parliamentary career, he worked as a parliamentary private secretary (PPS). This role involves helping a government minister. He also spoke out against the Iraq War and took part in protests. He often disagreed with some of the government's plans for public services.

In Opposition (2010-2024)

After the 2010 general election, Jon Trickett was re-elected as MP for Hemsworth. In 2011, he joined the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office. This meant he was responsible for challenging the government on issues related to the Cabinet Office.

He was re-elected in the 2015, 2017, and 2019 general elections. In 2015, he supported Jeremy Corbyn to become the leader of the Labour Party. During this time, he held several Shadow Cabinet roles, including Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills.

In 2020, after Keir Starmer became the new Labour Party leader, Jon Trickett stepped down from his frontbench roles.

Representing Normanton and Hemsworth (2024-Present)

Due to changes in parliamentary boundaries, Jon Trickett's old constituency of Hemsworth was replaced by Normanton and Hemsworth. In the 2024 general election, he was elected as the MP for this new area.

In September 2024, Jon Trickett was the only Labour MP to vote against a government plan to change the Winter Fuel Payment. This payment helps older people with their heating bills. He argued that changing it could make life harder for many people in his area during winter.

Jon Trickett's Family Life

Jon Trickett is married to Sarah Balfour. They got married on 31 October 1993 and have three children together.
