History of Jones Chapel

How Jones Chapel Got Its Name

The community of Jones Chapel gets its name from a local church. This church was named to honor an important early settler known as "Turkeytail" Jones. He was one of the first people to settle in this area.

Turkeytail Jones and the Trading Post

"Turkeytail" Jones was a very active person in the early days of the community. He owned and ran a trading post right in the middle of the area. A trading post was like a general store where people could buy and sell goods. Turkeytail Jones often traded goods with the local Native American tribes, exchanging items for valuable furs. This helped the community grow and connect with others.

Early Post Office

Jones Chapel also had its own post office for many years. It operated under the name Jones Chapel from 1868 until 1907. This means people in the community could send and receive mail right there, which was very important before modern communication methods.
