Jordan Abel was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. His father is Nisga'a and his mother is white. He grew up in Barrie, Ontario.

Jordan went to several universities to study. He earned a degree in English from the University of Alberta in 2008. Later, he got a master's degree from the University of British Columbia in 2012. He finished his Ph.D. at Simon Fraser University in 2019.
