Early Life and Service

Jordan R. Stewart was born in Louisiana in 1845. At that time, he was born into slavery.

During the American Civil War, he served as a lieutenant. He was part of the 73rd U.S. Colored Infantry. This was a group of soldiers who fought for the Union.

Political Career

After the war, Stewart became a state legislator. He was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives. He represented Tensas Parish from 1872 to 1876.

Stewart held other important jobs too. In 1873, he worked as a deputy sheriff. He was also a watchman at the customs house in New Orleans. In 1876, he was elected sheriff for Terrebonne Parish.

Around 1878, Stewart moved from Tensas Parish. This was to avoid political problems during a challenging time.

In March 1879, he was chosen to represent Terrebonne Parish. He attended a meeting to help write new state laws. Later that year, he was nominated by the Republican party for state senator. He won his election and served in the Louisiana State Senate. He was a senator for the 9th district from 1880 to 1888. During the 1886 session, he was on the Committee on Militia and the Committee on Rules.

Stewart also supported different political leaders. In 1882, he changed his support to William Pitt Kellogg for a position in the United States House of Representatives.

In March 1886, Stewart was at a political meeting in Terrebonne Parish. He was involved in a disagreement with another person and was shot. His injury was serious but not life-threatening.

Stewart had several other roles in his community. He was a member of the police jury. He also served on the parish school board. He worked as an agent for a business run by P. B. S. Pinchback and Caesar Antoine.
