Jorge Martín's Racing Journey
Racing in Moto3
Starting in Moto3 (2015)
In 2015, Jorge Martín began his full-time Grand Prix career. He raced in the Moto3 World Championship with Mapfre Team Mahindra. He rode a Mahindra bike alongside Francesco Bagnaia and Juanfran Guevara. His best finish that year was 7th place in Aragon. He scored 45 points in his first season.
Continuing in Moto3 (2016)
Martín stayed with the same team for the 2016 Moto3 World Championship. He earned his first-ever Grand Prix podium in the Czech Grand Prix. The race was wet, and he finished second. He ended the season in 16th place, with 72 points.
Becoming Moto3 Champion (2017–2018)
For the 2017 season, Martín moved to the Del Conca Gresini Racing team. His teammate was Fabio Di Giannantonio. He started the year very strong, getting on the podium in the first three races. He finished third in Qatar and Argentina, and second in the USA.
Later in the year, he got three more 3rd places in Barcelona, Austria, and Silverstone. He finished the season strongly too. In the last three races, he was third in Australia, second in Malaysia, and won his first Moto3 race in Valencia! Martín earned nine pole positions that season. This showed he was one of the fastest qualifiers. He finished 4th in the season with 196 points. He missed the Czech Grand Prix due to an injury.
In 2018, Martín became the Moto3 World Champion! He won seven races that year. These wins were in Qatar, America, Italy, The Netherlands, Germany, Aragon, and Malaysia. He also had two second-place finishes and one third place. He continued to be amazing on Saturdays, getting eleven pole positions. He earned 260 championship points. This was 42 points more than his teammate, Fabio Di Giannantonio. Martín had to miss the Czech Grand Prix again due to a broken wrist.
Racing in Moto2
Joining Moto2 (2019–2020)
As a champion, Martín moved up to the Moto2 category for the 2019 Moto2 World Championship. He rode for the Red Bull KTM Ajo Motorsport team. He finished third in Japan and second in Australia. He ended the season in 11th place with 94 points.
2020 Moto2 Season
In 2020, Jorge Martín continued with the Ajo team. This year, they used Kalex bikes. He started well, getting pole position and finishing third at Jerez. Martín then won his first Moto2 race at the Austrian Grand Prix. The next weekend, he finished second at the Styrian Grand Prix.
However, in September 2020, Martín tested positive for COVID-19. This meant he missed two races. After he recovered, he finished the season strong. He got a third place in Aragón, a second place in the first Valencian race, and a victory in the second Valencian race. Martín had six podium finishes that year. He also had one pole position and 160 points. He finished 5th in the championship standings.
Racing in MotoGP
Joining Pramac Racing (2021–2024)
2021 MotoGP Season
Martín moved to the top class, MotoGP, with Pramac Racing Ducati for the 2021 season. His teammate was Johann Zarco. He finished 15th in his first MotoGP race. Then, in the second race in Qatar, he got a pole position! He finished that race in 3rd place, earning his first MotoGP podium.
Sadly, he had a serious crash during practice before the Portuguese Grand Prix. He had to miss several races because of this. He made a full return at the Catalan Grand Prix. At the Styrian Grand Prix, Martín got his second pole position. After a red flag, he won his first MotoGP race! This was Pramac Racing's first MotoGP victory ever. He became only the third rider in the modern era to win a race in his rookie season.
The very next weekend, he got his third pole position in Austria. He also finished third in the race. In the last race of the season in Valencia, Martín earned his fourth pole position and finished second. When he started from pole position, he always finished on the podium. He collected 111 points and finished 9th in the championship. He also won the "Rookie of the Year" award!
2022 MotoGP Season
Martín and Zarco stayed with Pramac Racing for the 2022 MotoGP season. At the 2022 Australian motorcycle Grand Prix, Martín took pole position. He also broke the all-time lap record at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
2023 MotoGP Season
Pramac Racing kept Martín and Zarco for the 2023 MotoGP World Championship. During the season, Martín became a strong challenger for the championship. He was competing against world champion Francesco Bagnaia and Marco Bezzecchi. He won races in Germany and San Marino.
His championship challenge became even stronger when Bagnaia crashed at the Indian Grand Prix. Martín briefly took the championship lead after the sprint race at the Indonesian Grand Prix. However, he crashed out of the main race, and Bagnaia took the lead back. For the rest of the season, Martín fought for the championship until the very last race. His crash in the main race at the Valencian Community Grand Prix ended his championship hopes. He finished 39 points behind Bagnaia, taking a personal-best 2nd place in the championship.
2024 MotoGP Season
In 2024, Jorge Martín had an amazing season. He won the MotoGP World Championship! He showed incredible skill and determination throughout the year. This victory was very special because he became the first rider from an independent team to win the premier class title. He secured the championship with strong performances and consistent podium finishes.
Moving to Aprilia Racing (2025–)
Jorge Martín will move to the factory team Aprilia Racing starting in 2025. He signed a two-year deal during the Mugello Test. He will be replacing his friend and mentor Aleix Espargaró, who announced his retirement.
