Joris Vercammen's Life and Career
Joris Vercammen was born in Lier, Belgium, in 1952. He began his journey in the church in 1979. That year, he became a priest for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Antwerp.
Joining the Old Catholic Church
In 1988, Joris Vercammen decided to leave the Roman Catholic Church. He then joined the Old Catholic Church of the Netherlands. This church is similar to the Roman Catholic Church but has some differences.
Becoming an Archbishop
Joris Vercammen was working as the head of the Old Catholic seminary. A seminary is a school where people study to become priests. The priests and church members of the archdiocese chose him to be their leader. He became the 83rd Archbishop of Utrecht.
His special ceremony, called a consecration, happened on July 1, 2000. It took place at St. Martin's Cathedral, Utrecht. This cathedral is a very old and important church building.
Work with the World Council of Churches
In 2006, Joris Vercammen became a member of a special group. This group was the central committee of the World Council of Churches. This council brings together many different Christian churches from around the world. They work together on various projects.
Retirement from Leadership
On September 19, 2019, Joris Vercammen announced his plan to step down. He retired as the Archbishop of Utrecht on January 11, 2020.
